Boreal Beauty

Boreal Beauty, originally uploaded by Megan Lorenz.

The Northern Hawk Owl can detect prey by sight at a distance of up to 800 meters (half a mile).

Though it is thought to detect prey primarily by sight, the Northern Hawk Owl can find and seize prey under 30 cm (1 foot) of snow.

Hungry Hunter

Hungry Hunter, originally uploaded by Megan Lorenz.

Over the last week I spent several days in a field on private property with this Northern Hawk Owl (with the owner's permission)...from sunrise to sunset in the cold and windy weather just hoping for some luck. Some days he sat on the hydro wires all day and didn't provide any photographic opportunities, but on this day he was actively trying to hunt (albeit failing miserably) and moved to lower perches.
