Cold Burrowing Owl at Dusk
Cape Coral, Florida

Birds stand on one leg because of an adaptation called “rete mirabile” where the arteries that transport warm blood into the legs lie in contact with the veins that return colder blood to the bird’s heart. By tucking one leg up, birds reduce the amount of heat lost through their unfeathered limbs by half.

Oh. It's you again. Boring.

Trust

One of my favorite wildlife moments. Just sitting still and watching can sometimes build trust and a curiosity you wouldn't expect from an animal that can often be timid.

New frame, double-mat, plaque and UV Glass to protect the print...I couldn't be happier with how this turned out.

I've always believed in that saying that the things that you own end up owning you. Most "things" can be replaced. Some things can never be replaced and have sentimental value. This is one of those things for me.

Miss you Gary. Every day.

Felt sorry for this big guy...he seemed in pretty rough shape with the scarring on his face (any guesses what caused that?), his left eye appeared damaged and a huge tumour on a back leg.

You looking for me?

I'm back from a few great days in Algonquin. I'm currently going through my third tube of anti-itch cream for the blackfly and mosquito bites I managed to get all over my body but it's so worth it. Haven't been able to get any sleep with the constant itching despite the cream and loading up on Benedryl.

So....what did we see? one bull moose, two cows, a turkey with babies, male Spruce Grouse, female Spruce Grouse, turtles, two rabbits, an American Mink, one fox and the deer we came within inches of hitting (and when we stopped to catch our breath after the near miss - a certain smartass said "did you get a shot because I don't think I'll be able to get you closer to a deer than that again".

What a perfect weekend :-D

If you go back to "Trouble Trio" , you'll see this is exactly the same...it's the next shot I took during this session and they are all tilted the opposite way :-)

I had lots of people ask how I get the pugs to tilt their heads....there are a few words and questions that work well.

1) Do you want to go for a car ride?
2) Let's go for a walk
3) Do you want a pug cookie?
4) Where's Chris?
5) Pizza!
