An Eye For An Eye

In all of my trips to Costa Rica this was the first time I observed this behavior.  Two Toucans were sitting on a branch together in the forest canopy when another toucan appeared and landed on a lower perch.  Immediately one of the toucans above flew down and he started fighting with the new arrival.  They locked bills and fought beside each other until the one toucan flipped upside down on the branch while hanging and spinning the new arrival beak to beak.  After this struggle the intruder flew off completely out of sight while the other toucan seemed to stand guard on that branch until he was sure the other wasn't coming back and he flew back up to the other toucan still waiting on the higher perch in the canopy.

In this photo the intruder was being hung from the other toucan's beak and you can see that the tip of his beak is extremely close to the intruders eye.  Despite its size, the toucan's beak is very light and is composed of bone struts filled with spongy tissue of keratin between them. The bill also has forward-facing serrations which resemble teeth.  I don't know if the eye was injured because he flew off so quickly once he managed to break loose from the others grip...but I think he was probably fine and the only thing injured may have been his pride.

Windows To The Soul

The Ontario Spring Bear Hunt will be starting on May 1st. It breaks my heart and I have no idea how someone could look into the eyes of a bear like this and put a bullet in them. Shameful.

Are you still waiting for a response from me?

I'm mortified! While searching for a message today regarding a workshop - I realized that I've missed many messages for print requests, workshops and other requests and some that were there have mysteriously disappeared.

Please please please.....If you've sent me an email and had no response, contact me! If I initially answered your message about a workshop or other matter and promised I would get back to you at a later date, contact me!

I'm very sorry about this situation and always strive to answer all messages in a timely manner.

While investigating a few missing messages and emails today, I was very surprised to find an email informing me that two of my images are finalists in the Siena Photo Awards. Finding this today was lucky since I just made the deadline for submitting the high-res files!!

Beary Messy

"Howard called and he's not pleased about what you did to his freshly painted boathouse and muskoka chairs".
"But he said he wanted Bear Paint."
"No...he said Behr Paint!"
Last year we were visiting a friend when he got a call from "Howard". He told us to keep our eyes open for this bear and let him know if there was anything different about her. Her new look was quite a surprise when she showed up a few hours later. Bad bear. It's amazing how long it took before all the paint was gone. Didn't take many photos of her for the rest of the month!

Are your walls a little bare?

I think it's important to give back to wildlife and wild places...so a handful of my photos are available for a limited time through CWF.
