Mr. Hairy

I had so many special sightings and opportunities on this years trip...species I didn't even know about and some that I've dreamed of photographing since my first Costa Rica trip.

This is the Mexican Hairy Dwarf Porcupine and they are found exclusively in the Americas, mainly around Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama. They can be found in several National Parks of Costa Rica.

I know...yet another Lynx photo! Having the opportunity to see and photograph two wild Canada Lynx in Northern Ontario in March was a huge thrill. While I only saw the male on a few occasions, I had over a week of daily visits from the female in this photo. This was my first time seeing Lynx in the wild and it's going to forever be one of my favorite photography memories.

Florida Burrowing Owlet. These owls are comical to watch especially when it rains and they start posturing. This little one is spreading out his wings and letting the rain cool him after a scorching hot day

This photo made the list at the last moment....it was taken two days before Christmas and I couldn't resist his pose. This Marten was hunting turkey and that's something I've never seen before. He would wait on a tree until a turkey was away from the others and then he moved to the ground and stalked them almost like a feline. When the moment was right...he would strike and sink his teeth and claws in the neck of the turkey. He tried on five or six different occasions and didn't manage to bring one down.

I had a fantastic time in Newfoundland this year and unlike the last couple of years...the puffin opportunities were incredible.  One day we counted 68 puffins onshore at one time!

I'm privileged to be able to spend so much time with bears in the summer. I've been photographing them for years (this one since she was a brand new cub). People don't give them enough credit...they are highly intelligent animals and can coexist peacefully with us if we give them that chance.
